Plastic is everywhere. No wonder, when we produce 400 million tonnes of it worldwide every year.
The problem: most of these substances are not biodegradable at all or only with difficulty. Find out here why plastic is not just plastic and why we urgently need to reduce it.
Larger objects made of plastic are called macroplastics. Numerous tubes, bottles and jars are made of macroplastics, which are energy-intensively produced from crude oil and natural gas. And: More than one third of macroplastic production is due to the packaging industry.
Microplastic refers to plastic up to a maximum of 5 mm in diameter. It is found, for example, as abrasive particles in pastes, powders, peelings, washing gels, washing powders or in tiny form in lipsticks. While on the one hand microplastics are deliberately and intentionally produced for the products, microplastics can also be produced by the decay of, for example, plastic bags or the abrasion of polyester clothing.
Liquid polymers, on the other hand, refer to liquid plastics that are used in dissolved, gel-like or liquid form in creams, cleaning agents and cosmetics. They are used, for example, as emulsifiers and preservatives.
Microplastics, like macroplastics and liquid plastics, can have a huge impact on our health.
In March 2021, a study from San Francisco detected 109 industrial chemicals in the blood of newborns and their mothers. This clearly showed that chemical nanoparticles are absorbed by the child via the placenta. 55 substances were detected in human blood for the first time. 28 substances were clearly attributable to the cosmetic sector. For 42 chemical compounds, the sources and areas of application could not be determined.
However, studies are still lacking that examine the concrete effects that this has on us humans and on the animal world. However, it is already clear that some of these substances have harmful effects on health and that we must act quickly.
